Bad Memes: Existential Threat

Updated: Jul 28

The ugly head finally showing itself.

Deep Learning, AI, in the hands of those with incoherent mental models, existentially endangers everyone.

We have been warned by scholars.  Scientists and philosophers of repute.

Only today, a video clip, a little over two minutes in length, has just been made publicly available for the general public to see.  It is about Kamala Harris, one of the two contenders for the presidency of the United States, the other being Donald Trump (Robert Kenedy is pulling out).

This is the clip.  The content is not factual.  It appears as genuinely factual.  It is not.

Elon Musk, now owner of Twitter that is today’s X, has just endorsed Donald Trump in more ways than one using X.

Only some hours ago, he has exposed his 191 million strong followers to this clip.

Good chance most of his followers are ignorant of the nature of Deep Learning technology.

There is evidence that Elon Musk, in the least, is not aware of the kind of fallacies he employs as he reasons.  Here is an incomplete list of these kinds of memes, unreliable forms of reasoning, e.g. fallacies, that he has employed on X.

Fallacies employed by Elon Musk on X. Grabbed from ChatGPT-4o response to a prompt.

He has only recently himself admitted that his "mind often feels like a very wild storm."

Not difficult to account for.

Lies and fallacies mix with truth, contradictions ensue.

Contradictions not only entertain.  They confuse.

If Yao Ming is a dwarf, then I am Darth Vader.  From a contradiction, one can imply anything.

Proliferation of lies and fallacies within one’s mental model does not help anyone, owner of the mental model or everyone else.

Bad memes contaminate mental models the way viruses contaminate our blood streams.  They proliferate not only within one’s mental model but also within everyone else's when people get into contact with these.  They can cause pandemics if not managed well.

Twitter, now X, is a super medium for contamination. There are more like it.

In the long run, contradictions bring down systems.  Whether these are computer information systems or civilizations.  Predictions based on models, human mental models included (Large Language Models are also predictive in nature), when contaminated with contradictions are not reliable -- they often mislead.

Here is a list generated by reasoner Large Language Model ChatGPT-4o.  It is a list of claims made by Donald Trump.  Indicates the kind of mental model he has.

Fat chance the world is better served when he wins the presidency of the United States.

He is not the enemy.  The enemies are not the zombies.  The enemies are the bad memes, unreliable forms of reasoning behaving like biological viruses, that make zombies out of men.

Thanks to the good kind of memes, reliable forms of reasoning, e.g. Modus Ponens, Modus Tollens, more, humans are able to predict the future reliably and generally with much accuracy.

With these good memes, reliable forms of reasoning,  men conclude that whence men are at war with one another, life is brutish and short. That pattern means if in the future same rule applies, then predictable life will be brutish and short. Ergo, social contract, where everyone is equally treated sans bigotry so that such bleak future is avoided.  Thus, our civilization today.

The advent of Information Communication Technology, the advent of social media, has laid down some highway that makes pandemics of the wrong kinds of memes highly likely.  Good chance, today with the release of this video clip, and a deluge of similar clips to come, some pandemic event is going to take place. It is going to make zombies out of men.

Grabbed from ChatGPT-4o response to a prompt.

Everyone can predict, thanks to good memes — memes that still abound among about 20 percent of humans (Reason why Kamala Harris has a chance).

Predictable that some pandemic of bad memes is coming to engulf everyone.  It only means that those who know what is going on have to come again together to reestablish a social contract. Social contract that itself has once contaminated civilizations with the European Enlightenment a long time ago.

Obvious that most have forgotten what Social Contract Theory is all about.  Good chance that this is because philosophers who should have been the first to remember have focused more on emulating scientists dreaming about some Nobel Prize rather than bridging the gaps between those who know and those who do not.

Challenge now is existential.  Ironically, Elon Musk has already known that this is coming since some years ago. Quite a puzzle but can be explained — but then that is another story.
